Amid orange balloons, a cake, and a table adorned with treats, the children’s home at Kibbutz Nir Oz celebrated the first birthday of baby Kfir Bibas on Tuesday.

Kfir, along with his family – mother Shiri, father Yarden, and brother Ariel – was abducted to Gaza on Simchas Torah. The birthday was observed symbolically during a media tour at Kibbutz Nir Oz, where a quarter of its members were affected by the Simchas Torah massacre.

Despite the festivities, the children’s home still awaits Kfir’s return, his crib and pacifier untouched.

Yossi Schneider, Shiri’s cousin, said, “We’re celebrating his first birthday, and he’s not here. A quarter of Kfir’s life has been spent underground, away from daylight.”

The Bibas family has become a poignant symbol of the massacre, with father Yarden also abducted to Gaza. The last sign of life from him was in a propaganda video published by Hamas from captivity.
