Antisemitic Hate Crimes in April Double of Last Year

The total number of antisemitic bias incidents investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force in April of 2024 doubled over the previous April, with 32 reported last month vs. 16 reported in April 2023. Overall, antisemitic incidents in 2024 through the end of April increased by 48 precent, from 75 in 2023 to 111 in 2024.

Anti-Muslim incidents in April increased from 3 to 6, and for the year through April increased from 4 to 11.

The data was reported in the monthly crime index by the NYPD.

Overall crime across New York City dropped another 4.9 percent in the month of April compared to the same month last year, as major crimes in the nation’s largest subway system plummeted another 23 percent, continuing a downward trend that saw previous transit system decreases of 15.4 percent in February and 23.5 percent in March.

Bellwether crimes saw precipitous reductions in April, with nearly 500 fewer major crimes occurring in New York City in April 2024 compared to April 2023.

April saw another 15.5 percent decrease in shooting incidents (60 vs. 71), equating to a 13.8 percent decline in shooting victims (69 vs. 80). Year to date through the end of April, 65 fewer people were shot in New York City, an 18.7 percent decline over the same period last year, and 21 fewer people were murdered, a 15.9 percent reduction.

Five-hundred eighty-one firearms were taken off the streets by NYPD officers in April, adding to the nearly 2,189 guns seized so far this year. In total, more than 15,800 guns have been removed since the start of the administration in 2022.

NYPD attributed the improvement in crime statistics to the thousands of additional uniformed police officers flooding the subway system and street corners in shooting-prone locations.
