Israel confirmed Tuesday the death of Marwan Issa, deputy commander of the military wing of the Hamas terror group, after U.S. officials and Hamas had declared him killed in a Gaza airstrike earlier this month.

The announcement, made by IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari in a press conference, also included a confirmation of the elimination of senior Hamas commander Ghazi Abu Tama’a, who was killed in a March 10 strike in Nuseirat.

Issa. who was considered the de facto Chief of Staff of Hamas, marks the most high-profile assassination that Israel has carried out against Hamas in recent years.

Before the attack, it was verified that there were no hostages with him.

Israel had held off on confirming the death of Issa while conducting an evaluation of the airstrike.
