The High Court of Justice on Sunday granted the government an additional three days to prepare its response to petitions calling for the drafting of yeshivah students of military age.

Following the expiration of the law granting military service exemptions to yeshivah students last year, the government issued a resolution instructing state institutions not to enforce the draft for yeshivah students while new legislation is being formulated. This regulation is set to expire on March 31.

Initially, the government had committed to filing its response by March 24, outlining its proposed resolution to the complex issue of military service for yeshivah students, which has significant political and societal implications.

However, the government now has until March 27 to submit its response.

While granting the extension, High Court Acting President Uzi Vogelman and Justices Yitzchak Amit and Noam Sohlberg expressed their growing impatience with the government’s handling of the matter. They warned that if the response is not filed by March 27, the court will proceed to rule on the petitions based on the available information.
