In a significant development, the IDF issued an evacuation order early Friday, requiring Gazans to vacate the northern region of the enclave within 24 hours. This directive strongly suggests the potential for an imminent ground incursion by Israeli forces aimed at eliminating Hamas’s presence in the area.

The evacuation mandate applies to all civilians residing north of the Besor Stream (Wadi Gaza), encompassing the entire populations of Gaza City, the Jabalia refugee camp, and the towns of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya, as well as various other neighborhoods. This broad evacuation order is a clear indicator of the IDF’s intent to conduct extensive military operations in this area.

The announcement came shortly before Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s visit to Israel, where he was scheduled to meet with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The directive prompted the United Nations to request the IDF to rescind the order. Stéphane Dujarric, a U.N. spokesperson, emphasized that this order also includes U.N. teams and civilians who have sought shelter in its facilities, including schools, hospitals, and clinics.

The IDF’s warning to the residents was explicit, calling for the evacuation of all civilians of Gaza City to move southwards, as indicated on a provided map. The message underscores that the northern region is an area of active military operations and that this evacuation is in the best interest of the safety and protection of the Gaza City population. It further cautioned civilians not to approach the security fence with the State of Israel.

The IDF’s message also highlighted the presence of Hamas terrorists in Gaza City who exploit innocent civilians, using them as human shields. The IDF stressed its commitment to international law and minimizing harm to civilians, distinguishing its actions from those of Hamas, which have drawn comparisons to the dark days of the Islamic State. The IDF emphasized that its actions are focused on countering Hamas, emphasizing that this is a multi-day event, with continued efforts to expedite it.
