MK Rabbi Meir Porush (United Torah Judaism) was the victim of an attempted assault on Monday, but b’chasdei shamayim was unharmed.

The attack took place outside his home in Yerushalayim. According to reports, he was accosted by two individuals who drove up on an electric scooter, verified his identity, and then unsuccessfully tried to cut off his beard, before fleeing the scene.

The incident is under investigation.

Speaker of the Knesset MK Mickey Levy (Yesh Atid) spoke with Rabbi Porush afterwards and expressed his shock over the abhorrent incident. The Speaker then phoned the Yerushalayim Police District Commander and discussed ways to catch the attackers.

“I am shocked to the depths of my soul by the ugly and violent attack of MK Porush. I spoke with him, asked how he was and asked for the incident’s details. I then spoke with the District Commander, Superintendent Doron Turgeman, and discussed the initial details of the investigation and the possible methods to quickly apprehend the attackers. I thanked him for the police’s determination and quick response. An attack on public figures is a destructive act against our democracy and this is how it should be treated.”

Rabbi Porush also received phone calls from President Yitzchak Herzog, Opposition leader MK Binyamin Netanyahu and fellow UTJ MKs, expressing their outrage and demonstrating their support.
