Arab League Lobbies Against Embassy Moves
The Arab League on Tuesday adopted a resolution calling on Australia and Brazil to cancel plans to move their embassies to Yerushalayim and sent emissaries to those countries to persuade them to see the error of their ways.
The League said it will dispatch a “high-ranking delegation” to Brazil and Australia to inform officials there that they must “abide by international law” concerning the status of Yerushalayim, which is to be determined as part of an overall peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
Brazil’s president-elect Jair Bolsonaro has announced his intention to move his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim.
Australia announced over the weekend its recognition of western Yerushalayim as Israel’s capital, and will open some offices in that part of the city, although an embassy shift from Tel Aviv will not occur until a peace settlement is achieved.
