When I was a teenager, I would occasionally lein at Dunstan Road United Synagogue. One week, I hadn’t prepared properly and was stammering my way through the leining. The more mistakes I made, the more nervous I became.
When Rabbi Sacks was called up for his aliyah, I thought I was certainly in for some embarrassing complaints. But instead, he put his arm around my shoulder and whispered in my ear, “You’re doing a great job. Keep it up!”
He will truly be missed.
