Moldova Might Follow Brazil to Yerushalayim

Moldova’s president Igor Dodon said on Monday that his country would “very seriously consider” moving its embassy from Tel Aviv to Yerushalayim, according to media reports.

Dodon reportedly made the statement last week in a meeting with Euro-Asian Jewish Congress leaders. Dodon visited Israel in mid-December on his first trip to the country and was hosted by Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

The country was recently honored with a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who virulently opposes recognition of Israeli sovereignty in Yerushalayim.

Dodon has hailed the visit as one of his government’s major foreign policy achievements.

It was not clear how Moldova will stand up to the inevitable pressure from Turkey to shelve the idea.

Moldova, one of Europe’s poorest countries, has a population of about 3.5 million.
