The High Court of Justice on Thursday gave the government a two-week extension to outline its plan for conscripting yeshivah students into military service.

Acting Supreme President Uzi Vogelman ruled that the government must present its proposals to the High Court by May 16. Activists had petitioned the court to end draft exemptions for yeshivah students, following the expiration of a law allowing blanket exemptions for yeshivah students in June 2023. A government directive instructing the IDF not to enforce drafting yeshivah students, as a temporary measure, lapsed in March.

Vogelman also ruled that the government’s affidavit can be submitted to the High Court by a private attorney instead of Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara. Baharav-Miara holds the view that drafting yeshivah students cannot be legally avoided, setting her at odds with the government.
