YERUSHALAYIM – A police officer was reported in moderate condition after being stabbed in an attack near Herod’s Gate, in the Old City of Yerushalayim, on Tuesday afternoon.

The police officer, in his thirties, was attacked from behind, according to police.

The officer was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in the capital, which said he was conscious and in moderate condition.

A Border Police officer at the scene spotted the attack and shot the terrorist. The terrorist later died from his wounds.

The terrorist who carried out the attack was a 34-year-old Turkish citizen named Hasan Skalanan, who entered Israel on Monday from Jordan through the Allenby Bridge, according to Israeli media reports.

It is extremely rare for a foreign national to carry out an attack in Israel, with no such incidents having taken place in recent years.

The central unit of the Yerushalayim District of Israel Police, as well as the Shin Bet, are investigating the attack.
