Report: Israel Will Stop Iranian Arms to Syria in Guise of Earthquake Aid

YERUSHALAYIM – An Israeli official warned on Thursday that Israel will act to interdict any weapons Iran attempts to smuggle into to Syria under the guise of humanitarian aid, The Jerusalem Post reported, citing the Saudi Elaph newspaper.

The official, who spoke anonymously, said that Israel has information indicating that Iran has plans to the chaotic situation caused by the earthquake to transfer weapons and equipment to Hezbollah forces in Syria.

A number of Iranian aircraft carrying humanitarian aid have landed in Syria since the earthquake. Hezbollah and Iran-backed militias in Iraq have reportedly also joined humanitarian efforts there.

Regarding to reports that Syria had requested Israeli aid during the crisis, the official dismissed it as false, but added that Israel would respond positively if such a request were actually made, as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu‏‏ had said soon after the earthquake hit in Turkey and Syria.
