Free helmets for bike and scooter riders will be available Sunday at Gravesend Park, sponsored by the office of Councilman Kalman Yeger.

The distribution will be held from 1:00-4:30pm, at the park located at 18th Avenue and 56th Street. Each person receiving a helmet will first be measured by Department of Transportation personnel, to ensure a proper fit.

Yeger began the program in 2018, and ran it until the pandemic began. In previous years, the DOT would only hold the program until 3pm; Yeger was able to get it extended to 4:30, to accommodate yeshivos that dismiss students at 4pm. In the Spring of this year, 1,500 helmets were distributed, according to Yeger.

“It’s a way to encourage it, and demonstrate the importance of wearing a helmet..especially for older kids who are making their own decisions,” Yeger told Hamodia.

Helmets are available to all, children and adults alike.  But children will need a parent or legal guardian to sign a form in order to participate.  Helmets are distributed on a first-come first-served basis.
