Security officials on Friday returned the body of a terrorist killed Thursday after he attempted to murder an IDF soldier with an axe – by mistake. The IDF said Friday that the body had been transferred to the family because of a snafu, and that it would investigate the matter.

The terrorist was Ibrahim Baradiya, a 54-year-old Hamas terrorist who was recently released from an Israeli prison. He approached an IDF soldier near Chevron with an axe and hit him on the head with it. The soldier was lightly wounded in the incident.

The stated policy of the government is not to return the bodies of terrorists to families without the express permission of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon. In a statement, the IDF said that the incident “was due to a snafu and misunderstanding, and will be investigated. The return of terrorists’ bodies is a matter for the political echelon to decide.”
