Report: Syrians Smuggling Chemical Weapons to Hizbullah
Even as Israel and members of the U.S. Congress have been stressing the need for strict enforcement of the surrender of Syrian chemical weapons, a report emerged on Monday that Assad’s forces are smuggling the weapons to Hizbullah.
According to an interview with Syrian opposition member Dr. Kamal Labwani in the Saudi newspaper Al Watan, chemical weapons are being sent to Hizbullah hidden in trucks carrying vegetables in order to circumvent international inspection.
The destination of the cargo is said to be in Hizbullah-controlled mountain areas of Lebanon, far away from international eyes.
In addition, Syria has also already smuggled most of its chemical arsenal to Russian warships stationed off the coast of Syria, Labwani said.
There are also reports that chemical weapons cargoes have been sent for concealment in neighboring Iraq.
Al-Mustaqbal, long affiliated with anti-Syrian political elements in Lebanon, said the trucks crossed the boundary separating Syria with Iraq during Thursday and Friday. Border guards did not inspect the contents of the trucks, which raises suspicions that they contained illicit cargo, according to the paper.
