Legislature Expected to Act on Anti-Offshore-Drilling Bills

LONG BEACH, N.Y. (AP) —

Lawmakers in the Democrat-controlled state Legislature are planning to act on bills that would prohibit New York from authorizing certain offshore oil and gas production.

Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, of Yonkers, and the measure’s Senate sponsor Sen. Todd Kaminsky plan to join other state lawmakers and local elected officials at a news conference on Sunday morning on the Long Beach boardwalk in Nassau County to discuss the pending legislative action.

Kaminsky, a Long Beach Democrat, is among several state lawmakers on Long Island who oppose oil and gas drilling off New York’s shores.

The anti-offshore-drilling legislation is sponsored in the Assembly by Steve Englebright, a Suffolk County Democrat.

The Senate and Assembly bills are expected to be taken up next week in Albany.
