Israeli Drone Dome Deployed at Gatwick
An Israeli technology providing defense against drones enabled London’s Gatwick airport to reopen last week after drones intruded on the local airspace, according the U.K.’s Daily Mail.
The system, known as Drone Dome, and made by the Israeli government-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, was acquired by the British army last August. Six Domes were bought for $20 million, reportedly the first overseas customer for the system.
The Drone Dome is said to provide 360-degree protection against drones at ranges of up to three miles. The system features an advanced electro-optical sensor capable of blocking the broadcasts of a threatening drone, effectively severing communications between the craft and its operator, thereby neutralizing it.
It also has a laser interceptor which can bring down a drone, though the British army elected not to purchase the interceptor because government regulations would have slowed its deployment.
