Record 4.16-Pound Truffle Sells for $61,250
A record-setting 4.16-pound white truffle on Saturday sold for $61,250 at a Sotheby’s auction to a food and wine lover from Taiwan. It was found last week in Umbria, Italy, by Sabatino Truffles, who had turned down million-dollar offers from buyers in China. Instead, it chose to sell it to benefit Citymeals-on-Wheels and the Children’s Glaucoma Foundation.
The truffle was slightly smaller than a football; the average white truffle is the size of a walnut. The previous record was 2.5 pounds.
