In an interview with Time magazine, former President and current GOP candidate Donald Trump did not hold back his criticism of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s leadership during the events of Oct. 7. Trump placed blame squarely on Netanyahu for failing to prevent the Hamas terror attack, stating, “Oct. 7 happened on his watch.” He highlighted Israel’s advanced defense capabilities, suggesting that the attack could have been thwarted with proper intelligence.

Trump also expressed disappointment with Netanyahu’s decision to withdraw from a joint U.S. operation targeting Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps leader Qassam Soleimani in January 2020.

Although acknowledging the quality of Israel’s military leadership, Trump refrained from explicitly endorsing Netanyahu’s rival, Benny Gantz, suggesting instead that there are other capable leaders in Israel. He firmly asserted that such an attack would not have occurred had he been in office, emphasizing his administration’s success in combating terrorism during his presidency.

Addressing the issue of hostages held by Hamas, Trump speculated that the number of captives might be fewer than anticipated, without providing evidence to support his claim. He criticized Israel’s public relations strategy, particularly its dissemination of images depicting the destruction caused by airstrikes, suggesting it was counterproductive.

Trump remarked on the complexities of achieving a two-state solution, indicating a shift in public sentiment on the matter. He also expressed concern about the education of Palestinian youth, suggesting they are indoctrinated with hatred toward Jewish people from an early age.

Despite his critiques, Trump reiterated his unwavering support for Israel, boasting of his high approval ratings among the Israeli public and claiming to have been more loyal to Israel than any previous U.S. president. He pledged continued support, stating unequivocally, “I will protect Israel.”
