President Biden interrupted his weekend trip to Rehoboth, Delaware, returning to the White House on Saturday for urgent consultations due to the heightened risk of an imminent Iranian attack on Israel.

Jordan has responded to the escalating tensions by closing its airspace to commercial flights.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that he spoke with his Israeli counterpart, Tzachi Hanegbi, earlier in the day to discuss the situation in the Middle East. “During the call, I reiterated the United States’ ironclad commitment to the security of Israel,” Sullivan stated.

This heightened alert follows Iran’s public threat to “punish” Israel for the assassination of Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior officer of the Iranian Quds Force responsible for Iran’s military operations in Lebanon and Syria. Zahedi’s death marks the most significant loss for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps since the U.S. assassination of Qasem Soleimani in 2020.

The Biden administration is particularly concerned that an Iranian attack could provoke Israeli retaliation, potentially leading to a major regional escalation. Iran also warned through communications via several Arab countries earlier this week that any U.S. involvement in the conflict could result in attacks on U.S. forces stationed in the region, as reported by Axios.
