Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu attached his response to the Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon and requested a 30-day extension from the Court in the petitions on the Draft Law. “We have made significant progress on the draft issue, we request an extension to finalize the agreements,” he wrote.

In the opening of his letter, Netanyahu writes: “The issue of equality in sharing the burden is a matter of paramount importance to Israeli society and its future. The government’s intention to resolve this complex issue, which has not been resolved for decades, is expressed in the government’s commitment last June to address the issue within nine months.”

Netanyahu argued: “However, the time available to us was only three months in practice. The heinous attack on Israel on October 7 forced us to allocate our time and attention primarily to managing the war in the six months since then.

“The ministers and I involved in this matter are required to invest the vast majority of our time in managing the war, in the diplomatic arena, and in everything that accompanies them. Nevertheless, we made a tremendous effort, even amid the war, to bring about the resolution of this important issue,” he added.

According to him, “the principle guiding us is to try to reach an arrangement based on an agreement that will ensure its success, after it has been proven in the past that draft without an agreed-upon arrangement has achieved exactly the opposite result.”

“In recent weeks, we have made an intensive effort to formulate the required arrangement, and indeed, significant progress has been made, although the task has not yet been completed. A short period is needed to finalize the final arrangement, to complete the professional staff work, to establish the routes and frameworks that will enable recruits to maintain their way of life during their service, and to ensure that those ‘whose Torah is their livelihood’ can remain in Torah study,” Netanyahu added.

The Prime Minister clarified: “We are at a crucial moment in the war, with significant achievements and unique challenges. We have the power to achieve both the goals of the war and to solve the conscription issue. In these circumstances, I ask the Supreme Court not to make a decision on the draft issue and related questions for 30 days, so that we can finalize the agreements, complete the professional staff work, and arrange the necessary routes and frameworks.”
