In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at Afula’s Emek Medical Center on Tuesday successfully extracted a massive 1.3-kilogram tumor from a four-year-old child.

The tumor, constituting over 7% of the girl’s body weight, was discovered after her mother noticed abdominal swelling. Dr. Marc Arkovitz, the hospital’s pediatric surgery department director, highlighted the rarity of such a sizable mass, measuring 16 by 12 centimeters, in the kidney of a child of this age.

Following the surgery, including the removal of infected lymph nodes, the child recovered remarkably well within a day, demonstrating the resilience of pediatric patients. The child will now continue her treatment under the care of the hospital’s pediatric oncology unit, where the rare Wilms tumor will be addressed through a comprehensive plan involving chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and ongoing medical monitoring.

Despite its rarity, Emek has successfully treated six children with similar tumors in the past two years.
