Police are investigating antisemitic graffiti that was scrawled Wednesday underneath a mural, on a Los Angeles Judaica store and on a Jewish-owned deli.

LAPD officers were called to Chabad-Atara’s Judaica, located at 369 N Fairfax Ave, City News Service reported. Graffiti was also seen on a wall outside Canter’s deli, located in the 400 block of North Fairfax Avenue.

The messages were painted underneath a mural depicting Jewish history in Los Angeles.

Police are treating the incidents as hate crimes, according to NBC LA.

“We see antisemitism all over the country,” Benjy Spiro, West Coast Director of Chesed Shel Emes and local resident told Hamodia. “It continues to be causing fear and unease in the entire Jewish community, ands now were seeing it in our own backyards. We’re grateful to the LAPD for the protection they’ve been providing our community, and we hope that they catch the perpetrators and restore a state of peace and normalcy in the community.

Richard Hirschhaut, Los Angeles Director for the American Jewish Committee, said hate crimes against the Jewish community increased greatly after the October 7 terror attacks perpetrated by the Hamas terror group and the resulting war.

“Words have power. Words have consequences,” Hirschhaut told NBC. “And those who engage in such vandalism need to be held to account.”
