NYS Works to Reduce Energy Demand During Heat Wave

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed New York state agencies to conserve electricity to help the state avoid brownouts during the ongoing heat wave.

Officials will turn off unneeded lights and computers and raise thermostats, moves that are expected to reduce demand by 60 megawatts, or enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.

The Democratic governor on Monday says he’s also asking residents to help by turning off air conditioners, lights and other appliances when not using them.

The state’s peak energy load is expected to reach near-record levels as temperatures climb into the high 80s and 90s throughout the region this week.

Officials say elderly residents and others with certain health conditions need to take extra caution. They encourage residents to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest hours, to stay hydrated and to check on vulnerable neighbors.
