Assembly Committee to Examine New York Prison System

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) —

An Assembly oversight hearing is expected to examine the recent escape of two killers from a maximum-security facility, alleged abuse by guards, and the quality of mental health care for inmates.

Corrections Committee Chairman Daniel O’Donnell says Wednesday’s hearing will focus on oversight of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and examine both internal and external options for investigations help ensure staff and inmate safety and department integrity.

Two convicted murderers escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility in northern New York in June. Several prisoners reported beatings afterward.

Two inmate deaths in confrontations with guards in April have been under investigation by state police and two local prosecutors.

State corrections officials were invited but aren’t scheduled to testify.

State Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott is still investigating the escape.
