NY Trooper Who Caught Escapee In June Is Honored

WASHINGTON (AP) —

The New York state police sergeant who shot and captured an escaped murderer on the lam for three weeks this summer will be honored by a national organization.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund says Sgt. Jay Cook is its Officer of the Month for November. Cook spotted escaped inmate David Sweat near the Canadian border on June 28 and shot him.

Cook will be honored in Washington in May along with the other Officer of the Month Award recipients for 2015. The memorial fund honors the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers around the nation.
