State Senator Joins Crowded Field for Rep. Rangel’s Seat
A longtime New York state senator is running to fill the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Charles Rangel.
Bill Perkins announced Friday that he aims to represent New York’s 13th congressional district, which encompasses parts of Harlem and the Bronx.
Rangel, the 84-year-old “Lion of Harlem,” has served in Congress since 1972 but says he’s retiring next year.
Perkins’ state senate district covers much of Harlem. He held a kickoff rally for his campaign Saturday.
Several other Democrats have also declared their candidacy, including State Sen. Adriano Espaillat, who nearly toppled Rangel in 2012 and 2014, Harlem Assemblyman Keith Wright, former Assemblyman Adam Clayton Powell IV and Clyde Williams, a former aide to President Bill Clinton.
