BROOKLYN (AP) —

A NYPD officer who had been attacked with a knife was released from the hospital on Friday after a confrontation where he shot and killed the armed suspect.

Officer Filippo Gugliara went home with stitches, a day after the incident near a subway station in Coney Island. Police say Gugliara intervened on the assault of a 78-year-old woman by a 58-year-old man. The man had an 11-inch hunting knife and slashed at Gugliara. He yelled to drop the weapon and then fired twice, striking the man in the torso. The knife was recovered at the scene.

Police say the woman had been intervening in an argument between the 58-year-old and the owner of a shop near the subway station. The 58-year-old then started to attack the woman.
