N.J. Looks to Spruce Up Rest Stops With Shopping

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -

New Jersey is considering trying to make its toll-road rest stops into shopping destinations.

A bill working through the Legislature would require the operators of the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway to study new revenue opportunities.

They say the idea is to raise money for road repairs without charging the drivers.

The result could be more billboards, cellphone towers or even shops beyond the grab-and-go food and souvenirs there now. Another possibility is corporate sponsorships.
