GM Stops Some Corvette Sales to Fix Quality Issues

General Motors is temporarily stopping sales of some 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingrays to fix potential air-bag and parking-brake issues.

Neither of the possible defects had prompted an official recall as of late Thursday night.

GM has instructed Chevrolet dealers to halt delivery of 2,000 units of the Stingray because a part that attaches the driver’s-side air bag to the steering wheel might be faulty.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said the company is also briefly stopping shipments of the ‘Vette from its assembly plant in Bowling Green, Ky., until it can rectify the issue.

The company is also temporarily stopping sales of 800 Corvettes that “may have been built with only one of the rear parking brake cables fully seated and engaged,” Adler said in an email.

“The part must be inspected to assure the parking brake is operating on both brake drums,” he said.

The latest quality issues come as GM has shifted its focus toward identifying potential defects early and often to avoid massive recalls months or years later.

The company has recalled a record number of vehicles in 2014, but has not issued a recall in more than a month.
