Rep. Rangel Gets Powerful Challenger in Reelection Bid

NEW YORK

State Sen. Adriano Espaillat announced Thursday he will challenge for the second time 22-term Rep. Charles Rangel for the district that includes Harlem and parts of the Bronx, the Daily News reported. Having lost to Rangel, 83, two years ago by just 1,086 votes, this time he has a broad coalition that includes Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, who moved to his side Wednesday. Rangel’s majority-black district was changed after the 2010 census to include more Hispanics, which would favor Dominican-born Espaillat.
