NYC Couple Rescued From Muddy Upstate Sinkhole

CHICESTER, N.Y. (AP) —

A New York City couple is doing fine after getting stuck in a muddy sinkhole near their weekend home in the Catskills Mountains.

Jane and Ulf Hofverberg were walking their dog Sunday afternoon when she fell into a sinkhole created by a dredged pond in the Ulster County hamlet of Chichester, 50 miles southwest of Albany. When her husband tried to help her get out, he also slipped into the mud and got stuck. Jane was able to free herself, but Ulf was stuck up to his waist. Emergency crews arrived and used a ladder to pull him out.
