New York Inmates Received $500,000 in Benefits
Hundreds of inmates in upstate county jails received more than $500,000 in improper benefits, an audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has found.
Aauditors found 351 upstate inmates received unemployment benefits of nearly $325,000. An additional $236,000 was given from various social welfare programs. For instance, 313 received Safety Net Assistance benefits while 75 inmates received Medicaid benefits.
Auditors blamed a combination of potential fraud and delays in providing the state with information for the improper unemployment insurance benefits.
