‘Thick Unknown Substance’ Fills Brooklyn Street

NEW YORK (AP) —

On a hot summer Tuesday afternoon, Brooklyn residents faced what the Fire Department described as “a large amount of a thick unknown substance arising from the street.”

But it turned out to be far less mysterious. Firefighters discovered the problem involved a broken water service line to a private home in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Heights neighborhood. Underground erosion caused an electrical cable to burst, releasing a sticky, stinky coolant that seeped up to the street. The mess was cleaned up within hours.
