NEW YORK (AP) -

The NYPD was recognized Monday for its role in providing police training assistance in Haiti, receiving the first State Department Excellence in Overseas Criminal Justice Assistance Award.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly accepted the award in a Washington, D.C. ceremony.

Creole-speaking NYPD officers have been mentoring Haitian police officers since 2010 in investigations, anti-kidnapping strategies and general policing support.
