NY Corrections Commissioner Retiring This Month
The 68-year-old head of New York’s correctional system, who has presided over its operations and closings of a dozen prisons and camps over the past six years, plans to retire at the end of April.
Commissioner Brian Fischer began his state career in 1968 in addictions treatment and was later superintendent of the Queensboro and then Sing Sing prisons. He was appointed to the top post in 2007 by then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer.
No replacement was immediately named Monday.
New York’s 60 facilities house about 54,700 inmates, down from a peak of more than 72,000 in December 1999. That followed revisions in the state’s tough drug-sentencing laws. The department’s 29,000 employees also supervises about 36,500 parolees.
