A True Mechaneches

Although it is Erev Yom Tov and the pots are bubbling on the stove, I just had to sit down and express my thanks to Devorah Cohen for her contribution to the Sukkos supplement, “Beneath the Stars.”

I am certain that her article, “Stellar Example,” brought much warmth and nechamah to the family of Mrs. Ungar-Taub.

I also have vivid memories of the classroom near the gym as I watched my own daughters at the Siddur and Chumash parties, with the girls performing effortlessly and with such precision because of their ease, security and comfort, as this was part of their seder hayom each day.

I, too, have my own loving memories, as I was also one of her kochavim many years prior, as a first-grader with this extraordinary morah, with “Magic Carpet Rides” still in my mind’s eye.

However, my privileged relationship with this extraordinary woman went well beyond the classroom as a decade and a half after first grade, I became her daughter-in-law.

My mother-in-law was a true mechaneches par excellence, who cared about her talmidos well after they left her classroom, as you mentioned.

Perhaps because of her sincere, caring and conscious focus and her “devarim hayotzim min halev nichnassim el halev,” she was able to have her students and all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren absorb her rich, meaningful, and timeless values and chashivus for tefillah, limud haTorah, and middos tovos, so that all her kochavim over the decades would later illuminate the world while they shine and radiate the light of Torah and mitzvos wherever Hashem has planted them.
