A Reuters/Ipsos poll unveils a notable schism among Democrats regarding President Joe Biden’s approach to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the wave of anti-Israel protests on U.S. campuses. This discord threatens the coalition that propelled him to victory over Donald Trump four years ago.

Results from the May 7-14 poll show that 44% of registered Democratic voters disapprove of Biden’s management of the crisis. Among them, a significant portion express hesitancy to support Biden in the upcoming Nov. 5 election, a concern given his closely contested rematch with Trump.

Overall, only 34% of registered voters approve of Biden’s handling of the conflict, with 53% of Democrats, 31% of independents, and 22% of Republicans in agreement.

Of Democrats disapproving of Biden’s Gaza war response, approximately 77% indicate they will still vote for him in November, compared to about 93% of those approving his handling.

Regarding the anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian protests on U.S. campuses and cities, 38% of registered Democrats express support, while 38% oppose. Independents lean against the protests at 58% to 23%, while Republicans overwhelmingly oppose them at 81% to 8%.

Regarding the perception of the protests as antisemitic, 33% of Democrats agree, while 37% disagree. Independents stand at 45% agreement and 30% disagreement, while Republicans largely agree at 67% to 14%.

Conducted online, the poll surveyed 3,934 U.S. adults nationwide, including 3,208 registered voters, with margins of error around 2 percentage points for all registered voters, about 3 points for registered Republicans and Democrats, and about 4 points for independents.
