Suspect Arrested for Stealing Mail in Boro Park, Another On the Run

By Matis Glenn

A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly stealing mail from large green mail containers called postal relay boxes in Boro Park with the help of Shomrim, while another suspect escaped police.

A resident witnessed one of the suspects opening a postal relay box on 18th Avenue and 62nd Street at around 12:30 p.m., and immediately called Shomrim.

Several members responded to the call and found the suspects driving a white minivan. While following them, Shomrim called NYPD to alert them of the suspects’ location.

Police arrived, but the suspects did not pull over when ordered to do so. Officers followed them through Boro Park, while the suspects threw mail bags out of their car. The getaway car stopped on Beverly Road and East 7th Street, whereupon one suspect was arrested, while the other bolted away. He is still at large.

Police found numerous bags of mail in the minivan, but no weapons.

Wednesday’s bust is the latest in a series of such crimes that have been plaguing Boro Park and other areas in the last few months. Thieves obtain keys on the black market to open the containers, used by mailmen to replenish their loads while delivering mail, to avoid having to return to post offices while mid-route.
