UNIFIL Commander Warns of Escalation Risk on Israel-Lebanon Border

Major General Aroldo Lazaro Saenz, the mission and force commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the U.N. peacekeeping force responsible for southern Lebanon, has voiced concerns over the genuine threat of escalation along the Israel-Lebanon border.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lazaro emphasized the urgent need for “a halt to hostilities, efforts toward a lasting ceasefire, and the pursuit of a comprehensive resolution to the conflict.”

Since October, UNIFIL has consistently urged both parties to uphold their commitments under Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the 2006 Lebanon war. Lazaro stressed that a military approach cannot resolve the war, emphasizing that a political and diplomatic resolution remains the sole viable path forward.
