Two Afghan Islamic State Supporters Arrested in Germany for Alleged Sweden Terror Plot

Two Muslim men with ties to the Islamic State terror group were arrested in Germany for allegedly planning to carry out terror attacks at the Swedish parliament, police said Monday.

The pair, referred to by police as Ibrahim M. G. and Ramin N., both from Afghanistan, were arrested in the German state of Thuringia, according to prosecutors.

“The accused have been supporters of the ideology of the foreign terrorist group ‘Islamic State (IS)’ since at least 2023,” the statement said.

Ibrahim M. G. was tapped by the Islamic State Khorasan Province group to retaliate against public Quran-burning incidents in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries, and the pair had “concrete” plans, prosecutors said. These burnings have sparked protests across the Muslim world in recent years, and have included death threats and violent demonstrations.

The plans included shooting police and others “in the vicinity of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm,” prosecutors said. The suspects also “researched the local conditions around the possible crime scene on the internet and tried several times, albeit unsuccessfully, to obtain weapons.”

Ibrahim and Ramin are also accused of collecting thousands in euros for IS.
