In an incident of antisemitism, swastikas were discovered spray-painted on the façade of the shul in Middelburg, Netherlands.

The Jewish community of Zeeland and the Stichting Synagoge Zeeland expressed their dismay in a press release, emphasizing that such acts evoke feelings of insecurity and fear. Discovered around 8:30 p.m. by members of the Zeeland Jewish community on Motzoei Shabbos, the incident was promptly reported to the police, who have initiated an investigation.

The police investigating team spoke with a witness who observed individuals near the shul around 8:15 p.m., but it remains unclear whether they are responsible for the vandalism. Two swastikas were found, and a neighborhood search is scheduled for Sunday to explore any available video footage.

The Central Jewish Consultation condemned the act, highlighting the historical significance of the Middelburg synagogue, which has been an integral part of the local community for over 400 years.

Chanan Hertzberger, Chairman of CJO (Central Jewish Consultation), expressed horror at the act, stating, “How appalling that a defenseless old Jewish building becomes the target of antisemitic graffiti. The Jewish community has been an integral part of Middelburg society for more than 400 years. This third oldest place of worship in the Netherlands is tangible proof of this. I am therefore convinced that a swastika on the synagogue will not leave society in Middelburg untouched.”

According to local reports, since the Simchas Torah massacre, antisemitic incidents in the Netherlands have increased by 800%.
