New Jersey Transit will raise fares by 15% starting this summer, marking the first increase in over six years.

Fares for statewide buses and trains will rise starting July 1, New Jersey Transit announced Wednesday, to address a large budget deficit.

As part of the plan, fares will rise 3% annually.

The agency gave examples of how much the fares will cost under the new pricing system; one of which was a bus ticket from Tom’s River to the Port Authority in Manhattan. The fare for that trip will go up to $24.40; an increase of $3.15.

In July, the agency reported a deficit of over $100 million.
