Rutgers Chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine Reinstated

By Matis Glenn

Rutgers University has reinstated its chapter of the Students for Justice in Palestine group a month after suspending it, Patch reports.

SJP openly supports Hamas and celebrated the October 7 massacre as a “historic win for Palestinian resistance,” and wrote that they not only stand with the terrorists, but that all Palestinians “in exile are PART of this movement.” The group denies both Israel’s and the United States’ right to exist, according to their official website.

But Rutgers, which is currently under investigation by the federal Department of Education for possible civil rights violations in its response to campus antisemitism, did not suspend the group due to the messages it routinely posts in support of terrorism. Rather, the group was suspended for breaking school rules regarding protest location and the disruption of classes.

SJP, while reinstated and permitted to carry out campus activities, is reportedly on probation until December.

Allegations of antisemitism have been mounting at Rutgers, including an attack on members of a popular Jewish fraternity who were hit by eggs while having slurs hurled at them, Jewish students being yelled at, and pictures of Hamas’ hostages being ripped down. A campus Hillel worker says that students who report these incidents have been accused by the administration of lying. In a recent investigation by the media outlet ROI-NJ, around 7 faculty members spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisals; many others refused to speak at all out of fear.

In late October, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shut down SJP at all state-affiliated universities, citing their support for terrorism.

Columbia and George Washington University – both under federal investigation by the federal government – suspended SJP as well. Their chapters remain inactive as of the writing of this article.
