Islamic terrorists attacked a military detachment in the northern Burkina Faso town of Djibo on Sunday, sources told French news agency AFP Tuesday.

A security source described the invasion as a “large-scale jihadist attack perpetrated by armed terrorist groups” on Sunday, a security source said, adding that Burkina Faso soldiers inflicted “heavy losses” on the terrorists in response, though some soldiers were killed as well. Terrorists came in “several waves of armed groups” and the attacks lasted for over three hours.

The Burkina Faso Information Agency in a statement said that “more than 400 terrorists (were) destroyed during the counter-offensive by the Burkinabe Armed Forces against nearly 3,000 criminals who tried to seize the town of Djibo.”

“The attack began around 3:00 pm (local time and GMT) and was carried out by several hundred armed men who tried in vain to penetrate the (military base),” the source said.

Burkina Faso does not at present have a functional government, following a coup in 2022.
