Jewish Community in Marrakech Suffers Material Damage but No Loss of Life

By Hamodia Staff

The Jewish community in Marrakech, Morocco suffered much damage to their shul and homes, but b’chasdei Hashem did not have any loss of life in the devastating earthquake which killed thousands in the surrounding area.

“The lives of many were miraculously saved even though the magnitude of the earthquake could have resulted in far greater damage and casualties,” Rabbi Gad Bouskila of The Moroccan Jewish Heritage Federation told Hamodia. “I have been in contact with the local communities, and they are in dire need of immediate relief.”

Rabbi Bouskila reached out to Jews worldwide to help supply needed funds to support the people affected by this natural disaster and provide for their immediate needs.

The shul, which had been in use just a short while before the quake struck, suffered serious damage, as did the mellah (the Jewish neighborhood) and many of the houses of the Jews living in Marrakech.

Those who wish to assist the Marrakech Jewish community may contact Rabbi Bouskila at rabbigad@gmail.com.
