Hamodia regrets to inform you of the tragic petirah of Rabbi Yitzchak Zev (Velvel) Finkelstein, z”l.

Reb Velvel was the Nasi of Yeshiva Gedolah of Bayonne, and a major ba’al chessed. His father, Reb Yankel, z”l, was a talmid of Mir, and became close to the Mashgiach, Harav Chatzkel Levenshtein, zt”l, during the yeshiva’s stay in Shanghai.

Thirty years ago, the Finkelstein family founded Yeshiva Gedolah of Bayonne, and Reb Velvel accepted the responsibility for the financial viability of the yeshiva. He would solicit funds from friends and business associates and accepted responsibility for the fiscal burden of the yeshiva. In addition, he made sure that the talmidim had all they needed to succeed, and often financed extra help for those in need so they could shteig in their learning.

Along with his work for the yeshiva, Reb Velvel had a keen sense of discovering other people who were in need of assistance, and organized campaigns amongst his large circle of friends to raise the necessary funds to alleviate the plight of these families. Much of his undertakings will remain hidden and unknown, as he was careful to carry out these projects in secrecy in order to protect the dignity of the recipients.

Rabbi Finkelstein was 63 years old.

The levayah was at Yeshiva Gedolah of Bayonne, located at 735 Avenue C in Bayonne, NJ at 11:30 a.m.

Kevurah will be in Eretz Yisrael.
