New, Brighter Street Lights in Town of Ramapo
By Matis Glenn
Streetlight replacements in the Town of Ramapo, which includes Monsey, are set to begin this week during Yom Tov.
After a rise in car accidents involving pedestrians, the town’s supervisor, Michael Specht, approved a two-part plan to improve safety. Phase one will be replacing existing streetlights with brighter LEDs, which will adjust in brightness during peak pedestrian travel times, including Friday nights. At later hours, they will be dimmer, to allow people to sleep undisturbed.
There are currently approximately 1,500 streetlights in use. The first lights to be replaced will be on major streets, including Main Street and Maple Avenue.
Phase two, which is expected to begin in six months, will be the creation of around 1,900 new streetlights in areas identified as risky.
“After seeing many accidents we met with Rabbanim, askanim, and town officials to work out a solution,” Rockland Chaverim Director and Ramapo Town Liaison Yossi Maragreten told Hamodia. “Supervisor Specht was very supportive of the idea…We are doing everything we can to improve safety.”
The project, which is projected to cost $5 million, is expected to be completed in 12 months.
