New York City is taking measures to “curb” drivers from obscuring their license plates, according to the Daily News.

The covers make it impossible for speed cameras or toll booths to record the driver’s information, which police say happened 1.5 million times since March of last year.

“This merchandise endangers New Yorkers and it has resulted in significant losses in revenue to the city of New York,” City Corporation Counsel Sylvia Hinds-Radix said.

“These covers have no legitimate purpose but to allow people to break the law. No family should endure the loss of a loved one at the hands of a reckless driver.”

Amazon agreed last year to stop selling the covers, and two auto parts stores – Auto Zone and Advance Auto Parts – finalized agreements Friday to halt sales as well, after being served with cease and desist letters from the city last month.
