Bill to Raise Interstate Highway Speed Limit Under Review

A bill making its way through the New York State Senate would increase the Empire state’s speed limit on interstate highways from 65 miles per hour to 70MPH.

The bill, introduced by State Senator Thomas O’Mara and sent for review to the state Transportation Committee earlier this month, would only apply to interstate highways; intrastate highways are currently capped at 55MPH, and would stay that way.

In early January, Gov. Kathy Hochul said she supports granting New York City the autonomy to decide to lower its speed limit, which was set at 25 MPH citywide eight years ago.
